Barn Burner BBQ Kicks-Off the 2017 BBQ Season

[Chilliwack, BC] Mark your calendar for the third annual Barn Burner BBQ (BBBBQ). Hosted by owner and BBQ champion Angie Quaale of Well Seasoned, this year’s BBBBQ is co-presented by Johnston’s Pork and Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry. Kick off the BBQ season with this free event on Sunday, April 9 (10am-4:30pm) at the Farm Store (4540 Simmons Road, Chilliwack, B.C.).

This family-friendly BBQ extravaganza is officially sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society. Free-to-attend, donations will be accepted upon entry for the Full Cupboard, a program designed to raise food, funds and awareness for food banks in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey and surrounding communities.

The winning team with the highest total points in all four categories (Beef Brisket, Pulled Pork, Chicken, Ribs) will take home their share of $5,000 in prize money, along with the Barn Burner BBQ Grand Championship trophy, bragging rights, and a spot in the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational BBQ in Tennessee.

Teams also compete in a “Black Box” cook-off. This “Iron Chef” style competition presents cooks with a black box containing four mystery ingredients. All ingredients must be incorporated into a single dish and submitted to the judges, who will award points based on originality, taste and presentation.

Chef Dez returns as the event emcee, while meat lovers of all ages are invited to join the festivities including a live band performance, climbing wall, face-painting and free samples of delectable BBQ meat. If the samples don’t quite fill you up, a food truck will be on-site selling even more BBQ.

Registration is still open for those looking to sink their teeth into the competition. Register online to reserve your spot. There is room for a limited number of trailers and RVs with advanced notice. Electricity, hot water, and washrooms are on-site.

BBQ is NOT grilling!

There is a very distinct difference between the grilling and BBQ. Southern style BBQ is a technique in which meat is cooked at low temperatures (about 225 F) for a long time over indirect heat. The heat source is charcoal and wood. No gas/propane is allowed. The Barn Burner BBQ competition consists of four main categories: Beef Brisket, Pulled Pork, Chicken and Ribs. Brisket is cooked for up to 16 hours. Ribs take approximately 6 hours and chicken take as long as 4 hours.

More:

The 2016 competitive BBQ season kicked off on March 20 in Chilliwack BC, at the Farm Store with the 2nd Annual Barn Burner BBQ Competition, presented by Johnston’s Pork and Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry. More than 2,700 meat lovers of all ages took in the family festivities and enjoyed free samples of delicious slow-cooked meat, purchased take home treats from vendors, and participated in free activities including a climbing wall, and face-painting while listening to live performances by local band K-O’s.

Admission was by donation, with more than $4,000 collected to support The Full Cupboard, a community program aimed at raising food, funds and awareness for the issue of hunger in local communities. This event benefited the Chilliwack Salvation Army food bank.

A cool day was warmed by hot competition as 22 teams from across the Pacific Northwest, Alberta, and Saskatchewan traveled to compete. With visiting Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) head judges Kelly and Kathleen McIntosh leading a local team of certified judges, Rusty’s BBQ, Port Moody, took home the grand championship, after achieving the highest total points in all four competition categories: Chicken, Ribs, Pork Shoulder (pulled pork) and Beef Brisket. Grand champion winner Rusty’s BBQ also received a coveted ‘180 Pin’ from the KCBS for a perfect score for their pulled pork entry. A bonus Black Box category allowed the teams to show off their creativity with mystery ingredients: duck breast, pork loin, sushi rice and tarragon.

Brown Chicken, Brown Cow, from Hayden, Idaho, took home the title of Reserve Grand Champion (2nd Place), and the winner of the Black Box competition is The Smokin’ Grill Next Door, from Surrey, BC. Full results can be found for the first KCBS competition in 2016 here: https://bit.ly/1pFNdnL

Quotes:

“I am thrilled with this win! It was really unexpected. I had nerves all day so I wasn’t sure if I was going to make the scores I needed, but it all came together so I am very happy. The best part is that we’re all friends on the BBQ circuit so you cheer for them and they cheer for you. It’s been a great day.” -Rusty Johnson, Rusty’s BBQ, 2nd Annual Barn Burner BBQ grand champion

“Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry and The Farm Store enjoys hosting the Barn Burner BBQ. As this is our 2nd year, we took what we learned last year to make this year’s event even better; and it turned into a really fun day for the competitors, the public and for us. We have a great working relationship with Johnston’s and it is a pleasure to partner with them to put together an event where you can see everyone enjoying themselves.” -Carol Dick, Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry

“Johnston’s loves working with The Farm Store to bring the Barn Burner BBQ to BC. We have a great partnership with them that comes to life during this event that also brings awareness to local businesses and sustainable farming practices. There is a great educational component to the Barn Burner which is wrapped up in a fun-filled family day.” -Bonnie Windsor, Johnston’s Pork

“It never ceases to amaze me how generous and willing our communities are in supporting local charities. We would not have been able to raise $4,000 for the Full Cupboard without the Envision volunteers or those in attendance opening their hearts to the cause. These donations will benefit the Chilliwack Salvation Army food bank, which gives them three times the purchasing power with cash donations! Thank you to all who donated cash and non perishables.” – Leona Clifford, branch manager, Envision Financial

Congrats to our GRAND CHAMPION: Rusty's BBQ
